Geographical Location
AdvantageWest serves the 23 counties in Western North Carolina, which cover a nearly 10,000 square mile area that is approximately the size of Maryland. The region, which is bordered by southwest Virginia, eastern Tennessee, northeast Georgia, and upstate South Carolina, is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors and residents enjoy grand vistas as they drive on the world-famous, 250-mile Blue Ridge Parkway.
With its central East Coast location and excellent transportation network, Western North Carolina is approximately equidistant to Chicago, New York, Tampa and New Orleans, and the Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico are all within 500 miles. Seventy five percent of the United States population is within a day’s drive of Western North Carolina, and we can practically see the Research Triangle and Atlanta out our front and back doors.
Our sub-regions include the Highlands to the southwest, the Asheville metro/I-26 corridor, the foothills to the east, and the High Country to the northwest.

Testimonial
In an effort to respond to the diverse economic development needs of North Carolina, then State Representative Martin Nesbitt introduced legislation creating the regional economic development partnerships. It was this extraordinary insight that allowed AdvantageWest to become one of the most innovative and nimble economic development programs in the state.
