Gov. Bev Perdue gathered community leaders and elected officials to Transylvania Vocational Services in Brevard today where she announced the recommendation of funding for 16 Western North Carolina projects valued at $4.5 million.
"We are likely in the most challenging times in American and North Carolina history," Perdue said.
She is requesting money from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The entity was created in 1965 and encompasses 13 Appalachian states. The money helps enhance economic development in the states. The agency was appropriated funds from the recent federal stimulus bill.
For the request, Perdue wants to fund improvements to the water treatment plant in Rosman; fund the construction of the Western North Carolina Livestock Market and increase the Green Initiative at AdvantageWest.
If approved, the projects would create jobs in Western North Carolina, Perdue said. The federal government is appropriating billions from the stimulus bill, and she wants North Carolina to get "more than its fair share."
"It's a pot of money and somebody in America is going to get it," Perdue said.
The economy, she said, shows signs of improving and she believes North Carolina will weather the tough economic times.
"North Carolina will come through this," Perdue said. "It may not be easy and it may not be fun."

In an effort to respond to the diverse economic development needs of North Carolina, then State Representative Martin Nesbitt introduced legislation creating the regional economic development partnerships. It was this extraordinary insight that allowed AdvantageWest to become one of the most innovative and nimble economic development programs in the state.
