NC Magazine: NC Receives Economic Development Award
Date Posted: 6/23/2009
North Carolina was recently recognized for its 2008 economic development performance with a Silver Shovel Award from Area Development magazine. In giving the award, the magazine cited the state’s “innovative approach to business development,” which has helped North Carolina develop a diverse economy.
The magazine highlighted several major expansions in the state that set North Carolina apart. Those included two medical-device company expansions — Siemens Medical Solutions USA, which will add 300 jobs in Cary, and BD, which will build a new plant in Wilson County and expand its facilities in Durham County.
The publication also highlighted the $704 million GE-Hitachi Nuclear expansion in New Hanover County, which will create 900 new jobs.
Other states receiving a Silver Shovel Award in the same population category (5 to 10 million) were Georgia, Virginia and Indiana. Top honors — the Gold Shovel Award — went to Tennessee.
Area Development’s annual Gold and Silver Shovel Awards recognize states for their achievements in attracting high-value investment projects that will create a significant number of new jobs in their communities.
