Press Release: New Board Members Join AdvantageWest

AdvantageWest, the regional economic development commission serving the 23 westernmost counties of North Carolina, welcomes two new members to its board of directors. The 19 members of the board are appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the House and the president pro tempore of the N.C. Senate.

Henry H. Doss of Ashe County is a business consultant and principal with marketing strategy firm Avenue ISR. With more than 25 years of experience, primarily in banking and financial services, Doss is active with the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce and its Small Business Alliance. He is president of the board of directors of The National Committee for the New River, based in West Jefferson, and a member of the advisory board to the UNC Charlotte College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Doss is also a volunteer with High Country Hospice.

Larry Kernea of Cherokee County is general manager of Murphy Electric Power Board in Murphy. He chairs both the Tri-County Community College board of trustees and Southeast Industrial Development Association. His other community and leadership activities include: the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, Andrews-Murphy Airport Commission, the Cherokee County Economic Development Commission, and the Southeast District Power Distributor Managers Association.

Chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1994, AdvantageWest is a non-profit, public-private partnership. The major job creation initiatives of AdvantageWest are Blue Ridge Advanced Manufacturing Initiative; Blue Ridge Food Ventures, a food business and natural products incubator and commercial kitchen; the green-collar jobs initiative, AdvantageGreen; and entrepreneurial development activities such as Blue Ridge Entrepreneurial Council (BREC) and the Certified Entrepreneurial Community(SM).
