170 new jobs coming to WNC region, plus NC to hire 24,000 census workers

There's encouraging news here in the AdvantageWest region: A total of 170 new jobs are coming to the area with investments of nearly $6.75 million.

Thermo Fisher Scientific (Buncombe Co.), a world leader in laboratory equipment and services, will expand its operations, creating 104 jobs and investing nearly $5 million during the next three years at its site in Asheville, which manufactures cold storage equipment, centrifuges and ovens for medical and research laboratories. Salaries for the new jobs will vary by job function, but the overall annual average wage will be $40,811 not including benefits, higher than Buncombe County annual average wage of $32,968. Marves Industries (Burke Co.), an international producer of nonwoven textile cushioning and insulator pads for use in mattresses, will open a new North American facility in Hildebran, investing $1.75 million and creating 66 jobs. Headquartered in Mexico, Marves will open a plant in the former Bauer facility, using the existing building and equipment. The project’s 66 new jobs will pay an average annual wage of $33,636, not including benefits, which is higher than the Burke County average annual wage of $30,628. Census jobs. In other job news, Gov. Bev Perdue has announced that 24,000 census workers will be hired throughout NC in 2010. Some jobs will begin as early as January, while most will begin in February and March, and will extend until June or July.
