Registrations are still available for the 2010 MOUNTAIN GREEN SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE, to be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 23 at Warren Wilson College in Asheville. The event will focus on construction and design strategies for those serving the aging population. It will also address sustainable residential design elements and engineering strategies for managing wastewater.
The fourth annual event targets home and community-based healthcare providers, aging-in-place advocates, long-term care facility administrators, residential and commercial developers, tourism businesses, planners and designers, and real estate professionals. CEUs are available for nursing home administrators, architects, ECO REALTOR consultants and landscape architects.
Convened by Warren Wilson’s Environmental Leadership Center with support from a steering committee with representatives from a cross-section of businesses, organizations, public-private entities, nonprofits and individuals, the conference seeks to assemble a community of professionals that will help create a sustainability network for Western North Carolina. AdvantageWest and Land-of-Sky Regional Council are lead sponsors.
Plenary and breakout sessions include presentations from the following nationally recognized professionals:
• Barry Patterson, a management consultant with more than 15 years of experience creating and developing innovative strategies, services, businesses, and new business opportunities in sustainability. He will speak on sustainability as a stepping stone to community revitalization.
• Bill Thomas, MD, an international authority on geriatric medicine and longevity. Dr. Thomas will speak on aging in place and THE GREEN HOUSE® project, a model of care he founded that replaces large nursing facilities with smaller homes for up to 12 residents who require skilled nursing or assisted living care. The author of several books, including What Are Old People For? How Elders Will Save the World, is also well known in the long term care field for developing the Eden Alternative, in 1991, with the mission of transforming institutional approaches to eldercare.
• Robyn Griggs Lawrence, editor-in-chief of Natural Home magazine and author of The Wabi-Sabi House. Lawrence has been described by the Conservation Research Institute as “one of the best-informed advocates of natural living in America.” She says homeowners don’t need to spend a lot to make their homes more environmentally sound; instead, Lawrence advocates becoming more conscious and making better choices slowly, over time.
• Kathryn Lawler, of the Atlanta Regional Commission, and Scott Ball of the architectural firm Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company. They will present information pertaining to their work integrating the priority of aging in place into regional master planning for real places.
• Vladimir Notvony, PhD, professor and director of the Center for Urban Environmental Studies at Northeastern University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Notvony will speak on the fifth paradigm and other principles presented in his 2007 book, Cities of the Future: towards integrated sustainable water and landscape management.
• Stan Cross, education director for the Environmental Leadership Center, who will lead an instructional walking tour of the Warren Wilson campus that introduces participants to best practices for green buildings, waste management, landscaping, storm water management, land use, and agriculture.
In addition to the educational sessions, the $100 registration fee also includes a lunch featuring all locally produced and prepared food, a business expo of sustainable products and services, and a post-conference reception offering free local food and beer, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
