The 2nd annual Asheville International Children's Film Festival (AICFF) is expanding screening opportunities to eight venues with over 100 films from 25 countries over a two week period. The largest children's film festival in the Southeast, AICFF celebrates the best and brightest in international children's cinema with a 14-day extravaganza of films from more than 30 countries. This year edition includes an impressive blend of programs, including live performances, animation, features, shorts and hands-on workshops for the filmmakers of tomorrow. Tickets are now on sale.
Tim "T-bone" Arem, Artistic Director, with the help of Elizabeth Shepherd, has designed the program to help kids explore the beautiful and complex world around them.
"Movies are the perfect way to present new cultures and ideas to children, and to help them make sense of their own world. The short films and features in this year's festival are fun and colorful, but many also will expand the horizons of the audience. Our hope is to inspire young people to get involved and make a difference. What better way to spend the chilly days of November that to come together in community to experience international films made for the next generation of movie lovers?"
On November 1-5 and 8-12 area schools are invited to the weekday screenings at the host theater, Cinebarre in Biltmore Square Mall. Screening times are from 9:30-11:30a.m. Tickets are $5 which includes popcorn and a drink.
The opening night gala will be held Friday November 5, from 6-9p.m. at The Manor Inn. This is a fundraising event in support of Little Pearls, the umbrella organization and AICFF. In addition to the movie screenings, there will be a entertainment ,hos d'oeuvres, and a silent auction. Tickets are $25 for 1 person, $40 per couple and $60 for a family of 4.
Highlights this year include a retrospective of films from the Latvian animation studio, called Animation Brigade, eight short film programs, the Southeast premieres of three feature films, and of course, the annual Costume Pancake Breakfast presented by Earth Fare to be held in the parking lot of Vinnie's Restaurant.. From 8-9:30 a.m. on Saturday November 6. Proceeds form this event will benefit WNC Girls on the Run. In addition to breakfast, there will be arts and crafts, and entertainment, followed by a costume parade to Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company to view the first family screenings of the festival. Tickets are $12 per person and also include admission to the 10 a.m. group of films at Asheville Pizza. Bonesteel films is creating a film trailer especially for the festival.
Other notable bookings in this year's program include:
- The Southeast premiere of the Crocodiles, a new German feature film by Christian Ditter that has captured prizes at several recent festivals, including the audience Award and
the children's jury top prize at Amsterdam's Cinekid Festival. The film was also awarded the German national Kinder tiger prize for the best script of 2009.
- "Chills and Thrills," a short film program aimed at adventurous viewers, filled with exquisite animation and memorable live action films.
- A record number of short films, disbursed throughout the festival short film programs, from Spain and Latin America.
- Passmore Lab, a San Diego, CA film production company, will be providing a 3D screening of several films they have created.
The complete schedule is available online at www.aicff.org.
Kids will be important decision-makers on the new Festival's Children's Jury. Ten children aged 8-12 will be chosen to see a selection of films and award prizes in several categories. The jury will convene during the festival, and announce its awards at the new festival's closing ceremonies, at Posana Cafe on November 14 at 6pm.
Admission to most festival programs is only $6.00 for kids, $8.00 for adults, with the exception of special programs such as the opening night gala, the Costume Pancake Breakfast and the Movie Magic Workshops. Tickets to most events may be purchased in advance on the website or by calling (800) 838-3006. Many screenings sell out - parents and caregivers are encouraged to avoid disappointment, tears and tantrums and get their tickets in advance.
Teachers who are interested in bringing school groups to the festival should contact Tim Arem, at (828) 298-4789.
